TL;DR: What you need to know in 30 seconds
- AI tools like ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews recommend brands they can find and trust.
- Strong SEO is still the base, since Google’s AI features use its core ranking systems.
- Brand mentions, steady reviews and matching business info move the needle most.
- You can skip llms.txt files and “AI-only” writing tricks.
Ask ChatGPT for the best roofer in Riverside, and you’ll get three or four names instead of ten blue links. Learning how to improve brand visibility in AI search engines comes down to one goal: making sure your business is one of those names.
The good news? You don’t need a brand new playbook to improve brand presence in AI search results. We’ve run SEO campaigns for California businesses since 2011, and the brands that show up in AI answers share a few habits.
What Is Brand Visibility in AI Search?
Brand visibility in AI search is how often AI tools mention, recommend or cite your business when people ask about your industry or area. It covers Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot.
Think of an AI engine like a hotel concierge. A good concierge doesn’t pick a restaurant because it has a nice sign. They send guests to the place they keep hearing good things about, and AI tools do the same with brands.
| Classic Google search | AI search | |
| What people see | Ten links and a map pack | A written answer naming a few brands |
| What wins | Rankings, reviews, relevance | The same signals, plus mentions across the web |
| How you measure | Rankings and clicks | Mentions, citations and prompt tests |
This matters because fewer people click. A Pew Research Center study of March 2025 browsing data found users clicked a regular result in 8% of visits with an AI summary, versus 15% without one.
What Strategies Improve Brand Visibility in AI Search Engines?
Here are the nine strategies we use with California clients, in the order we’d tackle them.

1. Fix Your SEO Foundation
AI visibility starts with regular SEO. Google’s guide to optimizing for generative AI features, updated July 10, 2026, says SEO best practices still apply because its AI features rely on core ranking systems.
If Google can’t crawl and index a page, AI Overviews can’t quote it. That’s why our technical SEO checks come before any content push.
2. Let AI Crawlers In
Check your robots.txt file and firewall settings first. OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot, its search crawler, won’t be shown in ChatGPT search answers.
Some security plugins block AI crawlers without telling you, so this five-minute check matters.
3. Earn Brand Mentions
Brand mentions (other sites naming your business, with or without a link) matter more than most owners expect. A 75,000-brand industry study, updated in April 2026, found web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, compared with 0.218 for backlinks.
For a local business, good sources include:
- Local news: a quote in a city paper
- Associations: a chamber or trade group listing
- Best-of lists: local publication roundups
- Partners: suppliers or nonprofits that name you
4. Build Steady Reviews
Reviews show Google and AI tools that real customers trust you. Google’s help center says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking.
Ask every happy customer and reply to every review. Ten reviews in one week followed by silence looks odd. Two a week for a year looks like a real business.
5. Answer Real Questions
AI tools quote pages that answer questions clearly. Put the direct answer in the first sentence under each heading, then add details.
Use the questions your front desk hears every week. A Sacramento HVAC company might answer “How much does AC repair cost in Sacramento?” with a real price range. In the original GEO research paper, adding statistics, quotes and sources raised visibility in AI answers by up to 40%.
6. Match Your Business Facts
AI tools get confused when your details don’t match. If Yelp shows your old Fresno address and your website shows the new one, the AI has to guess.
Keep your name, address, phone and hours identical across your website, Google Business Profile, Yelp and directories. This core local SEO work now pays off twice.
7. Show Up on Video and Forums
AI tools read videos, forums and social posts, not just websites. A Q1 2026 industry benchmark of 75,000 brands found YouTube mentions had the strongest link to AI visibility of any signal it measured.
Short videos that answer customer questions count, and so do helpful replies in local Reddit threads. Our post on SEO and social media shows how the two connect.
8. Add Schema, Skip the Hype
Schema markup (code that labels your business details for search engines) helps Google read your name, location and services. Still, Google says no special schema is needed for AI features.
Our take: add LocalBusiness schema to keep your facts clean, but don’t pay for “AI schema” sold as a secret switch.
9. Measure What AI Says
Google’s July 2026 guide points site owners to a Generative AI performance report in Search Console. Pair it with monthly prompt tests like “best family dentist in Irvine” in ChatGPT and Perplexity.
Our guide on how to track brand mentions in AI search covers the setup.

What Can You Skip?
Google’s July 2026 guide says a few popular AI tactics won’t help in Google Search:
- txt files: Google Search doesn’t use them
- Content chunking: you don’t need to cut pages into tiny pieces
- AI-only writing: you don’t need a special style for AI search
We’d spend that budget on reviews and mentions instead. One caveat: the guide only covers Google, and other platforms may differ.
How Do Local Businesses Show Up in AI Answers?
Local businesses show up when the AI can confirm what you do, where you do it and whether people like you. That lines up with the relevance, distance and prominence factors Google uses for local rankings.

Picture two plumbers in Long Beach. One has 40 recent reviews, a matching Yelp profile and a page on water heater replacement costs in Long Beach. The other has a pretty homepage. The first one has a far better shot.
Long, specific questions trigger AI answers most often. The Q1 2026 benchmark found AI Overviews on 46% of queries with seven or more words, versus under 10% of one-word searches. Our guide to getting your California business into Google AI Overviews goes deeper.
Where Should You Start?
If you’re wondering how to improve brand visibility in AI search results fast, fix crawler access and business facts first. Then build reviews and mentions every month. That’s how brands can win visibility in AI-powered search, and it compounds.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can a business get recommended by ChatGPT?
Make sure ChatGPT can find you and has reasons to trust you: allow OAI-SearchBot in your robots.txt file, keep your details consistent across directories and earn mentions on local sites. ChatGPT search pulls from live web pages, so clear answers give it something to quote, and monthly prompt tests like “best roofer in Fresno” show where you land.
What is the difference between SEO, GEO and AEO?
SEO (search engine optimization) helps pages rank in regular search results. AEO (answer engine optimization) shapes content so tools can pull a direct answer from it. GEO (generative engine optimization) aims to get your brand named in AI-written answers. They overlap heavily, and Google says its AI features run on core ranking systems.
How long does it take to improve AI search visibility?
There’s no fixed timeline, since AI tools refresh their sources at different speeds. Quick fixes like unblocking crawlers can pay off within weeks once pages get recrawled. Mentions and reviews take months. On local campaigns, we usually see early map pack movement around 60 to 90 days, and AI visibility builds on that groundwork.
Can small businesses compete with big brands in AI search?
Yes, especially for local questions. A national chain can’t fake neighborhood reviews, local mentions or pages about a specific city. When someone asks for “a pet groomer in Santa Ana open on Sunday,” the AI looks for local proof. A small shop with steady reviews and clear service pages often beats a generic chain location page.
Should you block AI crawlers from your website?
Only if you understand the trade-off. OpenAI runs separate crawlers: GPTBot collects content for model training, while OAI-SearchBot powers ChatGPT search. You can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot, which keeps you eligible for ChatGPT search answers. Blocking every AI crawler protects your content but removes you from answers customers read.
What if AI shares wrong information about your business?
Fix the source first. AI tools repeat what they find, so check your Google Business Profile, Yelp, directories and old press mentions for outdated details. Update your About and Contact pages with current facts, then earn fresh mentions that carry the right information. Most AI tools also have a feedback button, so report the error there too.
Will AI search replace Google for local businesses?
Not anytime soon. A Q1 2026 industry benchmark of 76,000 websites found Google still sent about 190 times more traffic to websites than ChatGPT. The bigger shift is inside Google, where AI Overviews and AI Mode answer questions directly. Search Console already counts clicks from those AI features in your regular Web traffic.
Which AI platforms matter most for local businesses?
Start with Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, since most local searches still happen on Google. ChatGPT comes next, followed by Perplexity, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot. You don’t need a separate plan for each. Clean business data, reviews, mentions and helpful pages work across all of them.
Does social media help brand visibility in AI search?
Yes, mostly in indirect ways. Social posts create mentions, prompt people to search your brand name and give AI tools more places to see you. YouTube deserves extra attention, as covered above. Keep your profile details identical to your website, and use posts to answer real customer questions, not just run promotions.
How much does AI search optimization cost?
For most local businesses, AI visibility work fits inside a normal SEO budget. As we note in our local SEO guide for small businesses, California small businesses typically spend $800 to $3,000 a month on managed local SEO. Be wary of cheap “AI ranking” packages, and ask what work the fee covers.
