30-Second Summary
- The best answer engine optimization tools fall into three groups: free baselines, SEO suite add-ons, and dedicated AI visibility trackers.
- Two baselines cost nothing. Search Console reports AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic inside the Web search type, and HubSpot’s AI Search Grader gives a one time brand score.
- Paid entry prices we checked on vendor pages run from $29 a month for Otterly.AI to $250 a month for Scrunch, with Ahrefs Brand Radar from €47 a month.
- No tool fixes your citations. They measure how often AI answers mention you, and Google says there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
- Most California local businesses should run a manual prompt baseline first, then add one low cost tracker once they have a content plan.
Search for AEO tools and you will find a dozen “best of” lists, and most were written by companies that sell a tool. Some of them disagree on the price of the same product. We checked vendor pages on October 12, 2026 and built a list a local business owner can actually use.
We are a California local SEO agency. We do not sell or resell any tool on this list, and it contains no affiliate links. We also did not run hands on tests of every product, so this is a comparison of published vendor information, not a lab review.
What Are AEO Tools?
AEO tools are software that show whether AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews mention or cite your brand. You give the tool a list of prompts. It runs them on a schedule, then reports where you appear, which sources the AI cites, and how you compare with competitors.
Think of a rank tracker for conversations. A rank tracker checks ten blue links. An AEO tool checks what an AI says when a customer asks a question.
Some vendors call the same category GEO tools or AI visibility tracking tools. Our AEO vs GEO guide explains why the names differ and what stays the same.

The 10 Best Answer Engine Optimization Tools Reviewed
1. Google Search Console
The Performance report includes traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode under the Web search type. Google does not split it out, so you cannot see AI only clicks. It also does not track ChatGPT or Perplexity. Still, it is the only source of real click data from Google’s AI features, so it belongs in every stack.
Best for: everyone. Cost: free.
2. HubSpot AI Search Grader
This is a free, one time check that scores how AI engines describe your brand out of 100. The score weighs sentiment, presence quality, brand recognition, share of voice, and market competition. It queries an OpenAI model, Perplexity, and Gemini, and the full report asks for a short form.
Best for: a quick snapshot. Watch out for: it is a single check, not ongoing monitoring.
3. HubSpot AEO
HubSpot AEO monitors ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. It gives a visibility score, sentiment, competitor share of voice, citation analysis, and recommendations. HubSpot lists the product as beta.
Price: $50 a month, or $45 billed annually, for 25 tracked prompts, with a free trial and no card required. Each extra brand needs its own instance.
4. Otterly.AI
Otterly.AI tracks ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Copilot daily on every plan. Claude, AI Mode, and Gemini cost extra. Lite is $29 a month for 15 prompts, Standard is $189 for 100, and Premium is $489 for 400.
Watch out for: the pricing page shows a second, lower set of numbers for the same plans, so confirm at checkout. A free trial is available.
5. Peec AI
Peec AI tracks prompts and citations and organizes the work into discover, measure, act, and report modules. Starter covers 50 prompts and three models of your choice, refreshed daily. Pro covers 150 prompts and Advanced covers 350.
Watch out for: the pricing page we read listed no dollar amounts. Reviewers cite Starter at roughly $80 to $95 a month, so check the live page. Agencies have a separate pricing page.
6. Scrunch
Scrunch focuses on citations, sources, personas, and page audits. Starter is $250 a month billed annually, or $300 month to month, with 350 custom prompts, 1,000 industry prompts, and 3 user licenses. Growth is $417 billed annually.
Best for: teams that want page audits next to tracking. A 7 day trial needs no credit card.
7. Ahrefs Brand Radar
Brand Radar tracks AI answers plus YouTube and Reddit. Custom Prompts start at €47 a month. The AI Visibility Index, which scans a large prompt library with no setup, starts at €179 a month.
Watch out for: usage is counted in checks, which grow with prompts times platforms. Extra checks are billed as overage, so model your volume first.
8. Semrush AI Visibility
Semrush adds AI mention tracking to its SEO platform. The product page names ChatGPT and Google AI and lists no prices. Several reviewers cite about $99 a month per domain on annual billing, but we could not confirm that on Semrush’s own page.
Best for: teams already living inside Semrush reports.
9. SE Ranking AI Search
SE Ranking tracks your brand, site, and competitors across AI Overviews, ChatGPT, AI Mode, Perplexity, and Gemini. It also reports mentions without links and keeps historical data. The feature page states no pricing.
Best for: teams already using SE Ranking for rank tracking.
10. Profound
Profound is built for large brands. The free trial runs 50 preset prompts daily for 7 days across ChatGPT, Gemini, and AI Overviews. Enterprise covers up to nine engines, prompt volume data, API access, and SSO.
Watch out for: some reviewers list self serve tiers at $99 and $399 a month. We could not confirm those on Profound’s pricing page, which shows only the trial and custom Enterprise plans.
How to Choose an AEO Tool
Start with your questions, not the feature list. A tool that tracks nine engines is wasted if your customers use two. Use these six checks before you open a free trial.
- Engines your customers use. Confirm the plan includes them, since several vendors charge extra for Claude, Gemini, or AI Mode.
- Prompt allowance. Count the questions you actually need tracked, then compare plan limits.
- Pricing clarity. Prefer vendors that publish prices and explain what a prompt or check means.
- Citation drill down. You want to see which URLs the AI cited, not only a score.
- Exports and reporting. Look for CSV, API, or Looker Studio connections.
- Your current stack. If you already pay for an SEO suite, test its AI module first.
| If you are… | Start with |
| Working with no budget | Search Console, HubSpot AI Search Grader, and a manual baseline |
| A single brand under $100 a month | HubSpot AEO or Otterly.AI Lite |
| Already paying for Ahrefs | Brand Radar Custom Prompts |
| Already paying for Semrush or SE Ranking | Their built in AI modules |
| An agency with many clients | Peec AI agency pricing or Scrunch |
| An enterprise team | Profound |

AEO Tools Pricing: What Do They Really Cost?
AEO tools pricing looks simple until you compare units. HubSpot AEO, Otterly.AI Lite, and Standard all land near $2 per tracked prompt each month. Scrunch separates custom prompts from industry prompts, and Ahrefs charges by checks, so a prompt count tells you little across vendors.
Published lists also disagree. We saw Semrush’s entry price listed at $99 in some reviews and $199 in another. That is why we link to vendor pages and date every price.
For a local business, 15 to 25 prompts built around your services and cities is a workable start. That is our suggestion, not a vendor rule. It keeps your first paid plan near the bottom of the price range.
Are There Free AEO Tools?
Yes, and three of them are enough to begin. Search Console shows real Google AI traffic, HubSpot’s grader gives a brand snapshot, and several paid tools offer trials. Scrunch and Profound each offer a 7 day trial, and HubSpot AEO and Otterly.AI list free trials too.
Free AEO tools have a ceiling. They show a moment in time, not a trend, and the grader cannot track competitors over weeks. Use them to decide whether a paid plan is worth it.
Do You Need an AEO Tool at All?
Not always. Google states that “there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode,” and that standard SEO fundamentals still apply. A page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and no special file or schema is required.
Tools measure visibility. They do not create it. If your pages are thin, your reviews are old, or your business details disagree across the web, a dashboard will only show you that clearly.
Before paying, run the free method in our guide to tracking AI search rankings. It covers a manual baseline with a spreadsheet and takes an afternoon.
AEO Tools for Small Business and Local Brands in California
The vendor pages we read speak to brands and marketing teams, not local service businesses. None of them mention tracking Google Business Profile or local pack results, so a tool alone will not tell you how you appear when someone asks for a dentist in Irvine.
Build your prompts the way a customer would ask. Include the service, the city, and one qualifier. Then track them by city, because results can change from one city to the next.
- “Who is the best emergency plumber in Sacramento?”
- “Which family dentist in Irvine takes new patients?”
- “How much does a divorce lawyer cost in San Jose?”
Pair the tool with the basics that feed local answers. Keep your Google Business Profile accurate, collect fresh reviews, and keep name, address, and phone details consistent. Our California local SEO work starts there, and our AI SEO service builds on it.
How to Run a 30 Day AEO Tool Trial
A short, structured trial beats a long guess. Use this plan before you commit to a paid subscription.
- Week 1: write 15 prompts. Mix service, city, and comparison questions.
- Week 1: record a manual baseline. Ask each prompt in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google, and note who gets named.
- Week 2: start one trial. Pick one tool, load the same prompts, and compare its results with your manual notes.
- Week 3: study the cited sources. List which sites and pages the AI cites, then find gaps your pages can fill.
- Week 4: decide. Keep the tool only if it showed you something your spreadsheet did not.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best answer engine optimization tools?
For most small businesses, the best answer engine optimization tools are Search Console and HubSpot’s AI Search Grader for free baselines, plus a low cost tracker such as Otterly.AI or HubSpot AEO. Teams on Ahrefs or Semrush can use Brand Radar or the Semrush AI module. Enterprise brands usually evaluate Profound or Scrunch.
Are there free AEO tools?
Yes. Search Console reports Google AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic inside the Web search type at no cost. HubSpot’s AI Search Grader scores your brand across three AI engines without an account. Several paid tools also offer free trials, though the trials limit time or prompts, so treat them as tests, not ongoing monitoring.
How much do AEO tools cost?
Entry prices we found on vendor pages range from $29 a month for Otterly.AI to $250 a month for Scrunch, with HubSpot AEO at $50 and Ahrefs Brand Radar from €47. Enterprise plans are custom. Prompt limits differ by vendor, so compare what each plan includes, not just the sticker price.
Do small businesses need an AEO tool?
Not at first. Google says there are no extra requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and a manual prompt check in a spreadsheet shows most of what a small business needs. Add a paid tool when you have a content plan, several locations, or a need to report trends to clients or owners.
What is the difference between AEO tools and SEO tools?
SEO tools track keyword rankings, backlinks, and technical health in traditional search results. AEO tools track whether AI answer engines mention or cite your brand for a set of prompts. Several suites, including Semrush, Ahrefs, and SE Ranking, now offer both, so you may already own part of the stack.
Which AI engines should an AEO tool track?
Track the engines your customers use. For most local businesses that means ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity, with Gemini and Copilot as extras. Some vendors charge more for Claude, Gemini, or AI Mode, and more engines raise the price without always raising the value, so confirm what each plan includes.
Can an AEO tool improve your rankings in ChatGPT?
No. An AEO tool measures visibility and shows which sources AI cites. Improving results still takes content, reviews, consistent business details, and mentions on trusted sites, and the work happens on your pages and profiles, not inside the dashboard. Treat any promise of guaranteed ChatGPT rankings as a red flag.
How often should you check AI visibility?
Most trackers check daily, but a weekly review is enough for a local business. Answers vary between runs, so watch the trend over several weeks instead of reacting to one day. Review after any major content change, and keep the same prompts so results stay comparable. Log each run in a simple sheet so changes are easy to spot.
Bottom Line: Which AEO Tool Should You Pick?
Cheat sheet
| Situation | Our pick |
| Just starting | Search Console plus HubSpot AI Search Grader |
| One brand, small budget | HubSpot AEO or Otterly.AI |
| Already on Ahrefs, Semrush, or SE Ranking | Test the built in AI module first |
| Many clients or locations | Peec AI or Scrunch |
| Large enterprise | Profound |
The best answer engine optimization tools are the ones that answer a question you already have. Start free, write real customer prompts, and pay only when a tool shows you something a spreadsheet cannot.
Remember that every tool here measures. The work that earns citations still happens on your pages, your profiles, and the sites that mention you.
