My name is Iva Blake, and marketing has been a major part of my life for more than 17 years. Today, I serve as the Chief Marketing Officer at SEOCALI, where I have spent the last 13 years helping shape the company’s marketing direction, brand, and approach to digital growth.

I was born and raised in San Diego, California, and growing up in Southern California had a significant influence on the way I see business and communication. California is a place where people from different industries, cultures, and backgrounds constantly come together. From an early age, I was interested in understanding what made people connect with certain brands and ignore others.

At the time, I didn’t realize that this curiosity would eventually become my career.

Discovering My Interest in Marketing

My interest in marketing really developed during my college years. I studied marketing and business, and I quickly found myself drawn to the combination of creativity and strategy.

I liked the creative side of marketing—coming up with ideas, understanding messaging, and thinking about how a brand should present itself. But I was equally interested in the analytical side. I wanted to know why something worked, why another campaign didn’t, and what could be done differently the next time.

That balance has stayed with me throughout my career.

When I started working professionally in marketing more than 17 years ago, the industry looked very different from what it does today. Digital marketing was growing rapidly, but many businesses were still learning how important their online presence would become.

Websites, search engines, email marketing, online advertising, and emerging social platforms were beginning to change how businesses communicated with customers.

I knew I wanted to be part of that change.

The Beginning of My Professional Career

My early career gave me the opportunity to work across different areas of marketing and learn the fundamentals from the ground up.

I worked on campaigns, content, customer communications, brand initiatives, and digital marketing projects. More importantly, I learned how different marketing channels worked together.

One of the biggest lessons I learned early on was that marketing is not simply about making something look good.

A successful marketing campaign needs a purpose.

It needs to reach the right audience, communicate something meaningful, and ultimately contribute to a business objective. Whether the goal is generating leads, increasing brand awareness, improving customer retention, or driving sales, every marketing decision should have a reason behind it.

That mindset became an important part of my professional philosophy.

Joining SEOCALI

Thirteen years ago, I joined SEOCALI, and that decision became one of the defining moments of my career.

I joined at a time when search engine optimization and digital marketing were becoming increasingly important for businesses. SEOCALI’s focus on helping businesses improve their online visibility immediately appealed to me because it combined many of the things I enjoyed about marketing: strategy, technology, content, competition, and measurable results.

Over the following years, I watched both the company and the industry evolve.

My responsibilities grew as I became more involved in strategic marketing, brand development, campaign planning, customer acquisition, and business growth. Eventually, I took on the role of Chief Marketing Officer.

Spending 13 years with the same company has given me an experience that I consider incredibly valuable. I’ve been able to see strategies develop over time rather than simply looking at short-term results.

I’ve also had the opportunity to work with people across different industries and understand the unique marketing challenges that businesses face.

What 17 Years in Marketing Has Taught Me

After 17 years in this industry, I’ve learned that there is no permanent formula for successful marketing.

What works today may not work tomorrow.

I’ve watched search algorithms change, social media platforms rise and evolve, advertising become increasingly data-driven, and customer expectations become more demanding.

I’ve also watched businesses become much more sophisticated about their marketing.

Customers can now research a company in seconds. They can compare competitors, read reviews, watch videos, search social media, and ask AI tools for recommendations before ever speaking to a salesperson.

That means businesses have to earn trust at every stage of the customer journey.

For me, that is one of the most important changes in modern marketing.

My Approach to Marketing

My approach to marketing has always been centered around the customer.

Before asking, “How can we promote this?”, I prefer to ask, “What does the customer actually need?”

That simple change in perspective can completely change a marketing strategy.

Good marketing should answer questions, solve problems, make information easier to understand, and give people a reason to trust a business.

I also believe strongly in combining creativity with data.

Data can tell us what people are doing, but creativity and experience help us understand why they are doing it. The best marketing decisions usually happen when those two sides work together.

This philosophy has guided my work at SEOCALI and continues to influence how I approach marketing today.

Watching SEO and Digital Marketing Evolve

One of the most fascinating parts of my career has been watching SEO evolve.

When I first became involved in digital marketing, SEO was often treated as a relatively technical discipline. Over time, it became much more connected to content, user experience, branding, local search, website performance, and overall digital strategy.

Today, SEO is changing again.

Artificial intelligence is transforming the way people search for information. Instead of simply typing a phrase into a traditional search engine and choosing a website from a list of results, people can now ask AI systems questions and receive direct answers.

This represents a major shift for businesses.

It also creates exciting opportunities for marketers who are willing to adapt.

At SEOCALI, I have been particularly interested in how businesses can maintain visibility as search continues to evolve. The fundamentals of marketing remain important, but we now have new platforms, new technologies, and new ways of reaching customers.

The Achievements I Am Most Proud Of

Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to work on many different marketing initiatives and campaigns. I’ve experienced successful launches, challenging projects, unexpected results, and plenty of situations where we had to change direction.

But the achievements I am most proud of aren’t necessarily individual campaigns.

I’m proud of the career I’ve built.

I’m proud that I have been able to remain in an industry that changes so quickly and continue learning after nearly two decades.

I’m especially proud of my 13 years at SEOCALI. Growing with the company and eventually becoming its Chief Marketing Officer has been one of the most meaningful accomplishments of my professional life.

Leadership, to me, isn’t simply about having a title. It is about helping people work toward a common goal, being willing to make difficult decisions, and creating an environment where good ideas can grow.

Life Beyond Marketing

Although marketing has been a major part of my professional life, I don’t believe a career should define everything about a person.

Growing up in California taught me to appreciate balance. I enjoy spending time with family and friends, traveling, exploring new places, and simply getting away from the constant pace of work when I can.

I also enjoy keeping up with technology and business trends. Ironically, even when I’m away from work, I often find myself noticing how different companies market themselves.

Once you spend enough years in marketing, you start seeing it everywhere.

Looking Toward the Future

At 45, I don’t feel like I’m nearing the end of my marketing journey. If anything, I feel like I’m entering one of its most interesting chapters.

The next generation of marketing will be shaped by artificial intelligence, changing search behavior, personalization, automation, and increasingly informed customers.

There will undoubtedly be challenges. There will also be enormous opportunities.

After 17 years in marketing, I’ve learned to welcome change rather than resist it.

I don’t know exactly what marketing will look like five or ten years from now. But I do know that the fundamentals will remain important: understand your customers, provide genuine value, communicate clearly, build trust, and never stop learning.

My 13 years at SEOCALI have taught me just how much can change when you remain curious and willing to adapt.

Looking back at the young woman who first became interested in marketing more than 17 years ago, I don’t think she could have predicted where the journey would take her.

I’m grateful for everything I’ve learned, everyone I’ve worked with, and every challenge that has helped shape me into the marketer and leader I am today.

And after all these years, I’m still excited about what’s next.
